Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera

Dec 22, 2008 - At first glance the Canon EOS 50D digital SLR camera isn't a dramatic upgrade over its predecessor, the Canon EOS 40D (which remains available). For a price difference of about $300 (the 50D sells for $1600, including an EF 18-to-200mm, f/3.5-to-5.6 IS USM lens; body only, the price is $1200), you get a major boost in megapixels, an updated image processor, and a bevy of relatively minor feature tweaks.

Western Digital WD TV

Western Digital WDTV Media Player Review
by Nick Mediati, PC World
timestamp(1237567500000,'')
Mar 20 - The Western Digital WDTV ($110 as of March 5, 2009) marks the hard-drive maker's first foray into the field of media players, but the move makes sense as an extension of the company’s existing hard-disk products. The WDTV box lets your HDTV play media transferred from any USB storage device (flash drive or external hard drive), without any need for a streaming network device to bridge the distance from your storage drive or PC to the TV. Western Digital’s first-generation WDTV accomplishes its core task fairly well, but its menu system is slow.

The Palm Pre Will Be an iPhone Killer

After seemingly disappearing off the face of the earth while companies like Nokia and RIM released multiple phones, and while Apple's iPhone 3G has continued to enjoy immense popularity, Palm has finally hit back. The Pre is considered a make-or-break release for Palm — the smartphone is built on an entirely new Linux-based operating system called webOS.
Although we haven’t yet had a chance to get our hands on this hot new smartphone, the reports coming out of the US have been largely positive so far. In particular, the webOS operating system is reportedly intuitive, easy to use and visually appealing, and looks like the closest competitor to the iPhone yet. (See PC World's hands-on Palm Pre report).
User Interface
The Palm Pre's webOS interface allows you to keep multiple applications open and move easily between them. The Pre classes applications as "activity cards", and lets you flip through them by simply swiping your finger. When you want to close an application, you can just flick it off the screen. Applications can also remain running in the background even when they are minimised. The Palm Pre's home screen also includes a handy notifications bar at the bottom of the screen — something that the iPhone lacks. Incoming text messages, new e-mails and calendar appointments appear as notifications in this bar.
The Palm Pre will also be able to receive software updates, and all of these upgrades will be done over the air. Palm has also stated that it expects to have an application store to compete with Apple's App Store and Google's Android Market.
Although many aspects of the Pre's interface look very similar in to the iPhone's, it's really a breath of fresh air. It is visually enticing, looks dead easy to use and the integration of applications on the home screen certainly looks extremely promising. webOS should definitely give the iPhone and Google Android platform some competition, in terms of both visual appeal and usability.
Physical Keyboard
Although the iPhone's touch screen is the best on the market and text entry is relatively intuitive, tapping a screen with your fingers is still no match for a physical keyboard. Palm has equipped the Pre with a vertical slide-up keyboard rather than the traditional horizontal one seen on many other smart phones. This distinguishes the Pre from most other smartphones. Reports indicate the keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on. A downside is that webOS doesn't include a touch-screen keyboard — this means every time you need to enter text, you'll have to slide open the phone.

Aleratec slashes prices of Blu-ray recording wares

If you've been holding off on buying yourself a Blu-ray duplicator, bravo. Aleratec has just announced price drops of up to 65 percent on its 1:3 Copy Cruiser Blu LS LightScribe-enabled disc publisher and its 4x BD-R Blu-ray recording media. The former has seen a 25 percent dip down to $1,575, and for those unaware, it provides the ability to produce a trio of Blu-ray Discs at 6x each. The latter is potentially most riveting, with a 10-pack of "duplicator grade" BD-R media falling all the way down to $57.99 (MSRP). By our math, that's under six bucks a disc, and that's definitely hovering a lot closer to respectable than what we've seen in months past. Acer F1 coming in September, powered by Snapdragon?

Is one of Acer's mysterious smartphones packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon? According to the folks at All About Phones who reportedly attended an Acer event recently, the F1 will be running the 800MHz ARM chip, which is a tad slower than the 1000MHz equivalent in the TG01. The device will be Windows Mobile 6.5-based, but that's supposedly gonna be shrouded by a Flash-based Acer Suite 2.0 shell. The report also mentions a September release, which jibes with what we saw on that makeshift roadmap at Mobile World Congress, and a 560 Euro ($760) price tag. Nothing's confirmed, but between Acer, HTC, Samsung, and LG, surely someone's gearing up to join Toshiba in the Snapdragon bandwagon

T-Mobile UK nabbing LG Arena KM900 in black

Just ten days after the LG Arena (or KM900, if you're the proper type) launched officially in Europe, T-Mobile UK has already moved in to snag some thunder with an exclusive color: black. Not like black handsets are hard to find or anything (in fact, we already knew this phone was shipping to someone in black), but we all know how giddy the world gets when something gets labeled as rare. Reportedly, the formal color name will be Titan Black, and outside of the new hue, everything else will remain the same. Check it later this month for free on Flext 40 and Combi 40 plans.

3DeeShell autostereoscopic iPhone skin now available to order

Intrigued by Wazabee's promise of 3D images on an iPhone without the need for goofy 3D glasses? Then you'll no doubt want to head on over to the company's website post haste, as its 3DeeShell iPhone skin is now finally available to order for the not so low price of $49.99. In addition to adding an extra dimension to a currently limited number of apps (Wazabee provides three itself), the skin also serves a protective shell that you can leave on your iPhone at all times, with the autostereoscopic lens able to slide out to prevent unwanted headaches or hallucinations during non-3D use. Of course, the apps and lens will also work just fine on an iPod touch, just don't expect a very snug fit from the case
